Landing Craft; Vehicle; Personnel (LCVP) or Higgins' boat is a type of boat used during and after World War II. The craft was used for transport and landing: supplies; small vehicles and soldiers. They were used on a massive scale in Operation Overlord and during D-Day (June 6; 1944); in Operation Torch in North Africa; Husky; Shingle and Avalanche in Italy; Dragoon; as well as in battles in the Pacific at the Battle of Guadalcanal; Gilbert Islands; the Philippines; Iwo Jimie and Okinawa.
The barge was designed by Andrew Higgins and various manufacturers have created more than 20;000 units of these units.
For the most part; the structure was mainly built of wooden plywood; which made the boat very cheap and simple to create; extremely light; but at the same time did not give any protection against fire. Thanks to its flat bottom; a special lowered front ramp and a drive cover; it was able to flow into very shallow water. It could have take a 36-seater platoon or a small vehicle; e.g. Jeep and 12 soldiers or 3.6 tons of cargo. It reached speeds of up to 12 knots (14 mph; 22 km/h). The boat was armed with 0.30 inch (7.62 mm) machine guns operated by two gunmen.
From the world of COBI comes a fantastic model that faithfully imitates its historical original in 1:35 scale. It was released in connection with the 75th anniversary of D-Day and Operation Overlord. It has moving components such as two machine guns with a cover and a lowering and lifting mechanism for the front ramp based on the cable system. The vehicle has been fitted with sliders to make it easier to play with on the carpet; floor or table top. The set utilises prints rather than stickers for extra detail and durability. It also includes two German landing dams (used; among other things; to secure Omaha beach) and three figures of American soldiers: a rare figure of a sailor-helmsman in a life jacket; and two infantry soldiers armed with a Springfield rifle and a Thompson submachine gun. In the box you can also find a special card with vehicle statistics; which is intended for the Historical Battle Game; for which the rules manual can be downloaded for free from the www.cobigames.com
