The M4 Sherman was the most numerous battle tank used by the United States and some of the other Western Allies in World War II. Of the many Sherman variants; the M4A2 was one of the few with a diesel engine. Most of the approximately 8000 M4A2 tanks produced were employed by the United States' allies. However; the Marine Corps did field them in the Pacific; when the smaller M2 light tank proved to be inadequate.
